The short version
- You can attend a funeral or walk in our places as a guest, with no account and no real name.
- You can also make a memorial and hold a funeral without an account. It is private and is deleted after 24 hours, unless you sign in to keep it.
- To keep a memorial, host a gathering, send direct messages or buy credits, you sign in with Google.
- We ask about your faith or way of life when you first sign in as an adult. "Prefer not to say" is a full answer, and it changes nothing else. We do not ask anyone under 18.
- Some features are not available to people aged 13 to 17, to help keep them safe. No one under 13 can enter.
- We never show your email address or your answer about faith to other people.
- What you put on a public memorial, and any photo you show there, can be seen by anyone. A private memorial can be seen only by you and the people you invite.
- If you buy credits, you pay Creem, our payment provider. We keep a record of the purchase, but never your card details.
- We do not show ads and we do not sell your information.
- You can change or remove your memorials and delete your account at any time.
Who runs this place
Bridgeside is run by one person, Jinhyuk Jang, a sole proprietor in South Korea, who is also responsible for privacy here. You can write to privacy@bridgeside.pet about anything on this page, or to support@bridgeside.pet about anything else.
What we handle, and why
| What | Why | Who can see it | How long we keep it |
|---|---|---|---|
| As a guest: the name and look you choose | So others can see you | People in your room | While you are connected |
| Account: the ID and email Google gives us, your name and look, which memorials are yours, and your answer about faith | So you can sign in on any device and manage what is yours | You and us. Your name and look appear to people in your room. | Until you delete your account. We do not delete an account for being unused. |
| Age group: your age group, and if you are under 18, the month you turn 18. Never your birth date. | To give you the right features and keep younger people safe | Only us | With your account or visit. The month is deleted once you turn 18. |
| Sign-in cookie: a random token. We store only a scrambled copy. | To keep you signed in | Your browser and us | Up to 90 days, or until you log out |
| Memorial: your pet's name, kind, breed and dates, your story, the name you give, a photo if you add one, the stone you choose, and the place, field and spot where it stands, with when it last moved | To show the memorial | Public: anyone, including where it stands. Private: you, us, and anyone you give an invite link. | Until it is changed or removed. A removed memorial is kept hidden for 30 days, so you can bring it back, and its spot stays taken on the map of its field during that time. See "Changing and removing things." |
| Shrine: how you arrange your memorial's setting, the objects in it, words on frame cards, and which photos and tapes it shows | To show the memorial as you arranged it | The same people as the memorial | Until you change it, or the memorial is removed |
| Temporary memorial, without an account: the same details, with any photos, tapes, Life Card and funerals on it | So you can hold a funeral without signing in | You, us, and anyone you give an invite link. It is not listed and stands in no place. | Deleted after 24 hours, unless you sign in on the same device to keep it. It stays private after that, until you choose to show it. See "Reports" for what a report can keep. |
| Without an account, on your device: a random token (we store only a scrambled copy), your age group, the version of the Terms you accepted and when, and for 24 hours a scrambled form of your IP address | So you stay the owner of what you made, and we have a record that you accepted the Terms | Your browser and us | Up to 90 days after you last answered or made a temporary memorial. If you sign in, your Terms record moves to your account and this is deleted. |
| Cassette tapes: the audio you upload, your handwritten label, its length, and whether visitors can play it | To let you keep and play your pet's sounds | You and us. Also visitors, if you allow it, anyone who taps the memorial's star if you choose the tape for it, and people at a funeral where you play it. | Until you delete it or the memorial is removed |
| Faith or tradition on a memorial: a private copy of your answer | To suggest funerals that may suit you | You and us. Never shown publicly. | Until you change it, or the memorial or your account is removed |
| How you said goodbye: your answer on a memorial, if you give one, such as "Buried at home" | To start the memorial with fitting things, suggest a place and fit a funeral's words. Nothing else, and never for advertising. | You and us. Visitors see one short line only if you turn it on in Edit. | Until you change it, or the memorial is removed |
| Funeral: the memorial, the kind of funeral, the steps, the words you write, the time, your host name and an invite code | To hold the funeral | You, and anyone with the invite link. A link stops working 7 days after the funeral ends, and you can replace it at any time. Others see only that a funeral was held, and when. | Until the memorial is removed. You can cancel one before it starts. |
| Gathering: title, description, time, length, setting, your host name and any invite code | To hold the gathering | Public ones: anyone. Invite ones: anyone with the link. | Deleted 30 days after it ends. If you delete your account first, your host name comes off at once. |
| Guestbook notes: the name you give, your words and the time | To show the note on the memorial | Anyone | Until the memorial or the note is removed. We also keep, privately, which account it came from until you delete that account, and a scrambled form of the IP address for 30 days, so a report can be acted on. |
| Being in a room: your name, look, position, movements and gestures | So others can see you there | People in your room | While you are connected |
| Room tickets: a short signed pass your browser holds to enter a room, with your account or device ID, age group, a scrambled form of your IP address, whether you host or signed up, and up to 20 people you have blocked | To let you into a room, and keep out anyone banned or removed | Your browser, and the room you enter | In your browser's memory only. Each lasts 10 minutes, and is renewed while you are connected, for up to 24 hours. |
| Room chat: your words, the name you give and the time | To pass your words to your room | People in your room | Not saved, except as described under "Reports" |
| Direct messages: your words, your name and the time | To deliver them live | You and the other person | Not saved, except as described under "Reports" |
| Candles and flowers | To show a count on the memorial | Anyone sees the count | Until the memorial is removed |
| Purchases: see "Buying credits" below | To sell credits, give refunds and keep financial records | You and us | See "Buying credits" |
| Reports: see below | To look into problems | Only us | Deleted 90 days after it was made, whether or not we have closed it, and 30 days for a report about self-harm or someone under 18. A saved copy of what was reported goes after 14 days. If you delete your account, your name comes off reports you made. |
| Takedown requests: your name, how to reach you, what it is about and the details | To act on your request and answer you | Only us | Your name, contact and details are deleted 180 days after we close the request. The ticket stays, to show it was handled. |
| Bans: the account, or for a guest the IP address | To keep someone out after serious harm | Only us | A ban by network, 12 months. A ban on an account lasts until we lift it, and a scrambled form of its Google ID stays so that deleting the account does not lift it. |
| IP address | To limit new memorials to 5 a day from one place, and similar limits | Only us | Most limits hold it in memory only, for at most about a day. The daily limits keep no address: only a count against a short code made from it with a key that changes every day, which about 256 addresses share. It is deleted the next day. In a scrambled form it stays longer in these places: a guestbook note, 30 days; a device with no account, 24 hours; a room ticket, up to 24 hours; the memory of the room you are in, while you are there; a funeral's list of people its host removed, up to 24 hours; a report and a ban, for as long as those are kept; and if a host removes someone from a gathering, until 30 days after the gathering ends. |
| What our staff do: when an administrator removes or restores something, bans someone, or looks at something private, we write down who, what and when | So we can check how this place is run | Only us | 1 year |
| Logs our server writes about errors and problems | To keep the service running | Us and our hosting provider | Kept by Cloudflare for up to 7 days. We write them to leave out IP addresses, locations, emails, messages and payment details. Cloudflare also keeps its own records of traffic, for example for security, under its own policies. |
We may store your IP address in a scrambled form called a hash. That makes it harder to read, but it does not make it anonymous, so we treat it as personal information.
Our places
A public memorial stands in one of our places, in a field, on a spot. Anyone visiting can see where it stands, and can find it by its pet's name. Its owner can move it, within limits. When you choose a place to go to, your device remembers the choice, and sends it when you enter a room, so that we can put you there. We do not store it.
Your answer about faith or way of life
When you first sign in as an adult, we ask about your faith or way of life. We do not ask anyone under 18. You have to pick an answer to continue, but you do not have to tell us anything: "Prefer not to say" and "No religion" are both valid, and every part of Bridgeside stays open to you whichever you choose.
Information about faith, or about having none, is sensitive, so here is exactly what happens:
- Why we ask: only to show the funerals and readings that may suit you first. All the others stay available. We do not use your answer for anything else. We do not use it for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not group or search people by it. It never decides which place a memorial stands in.
- Who can see it: only you and us. We keep it with your account, and we copy it privately to each memorial you make, where you can change it. It is never included in what we show the public or other visitors.
- Your agreement: if you give any answer other than "Prefer not to say", we ask for your agreement first, in a separate box that is not ticked for you and is apart from our terms. It says: "I agree that Bridgeside may keep this answer, which may reveal my beliefs, with my account, to show me first the funerals and readings that may suit me. It stays private. It is kept until I change it or delete my account. I can change it in Settings at any time. I do not have to agree: I can choose 'Prefer not to say', and I will lose nothing." We keep a record of when you agreed.
- Changing your mind: you can change your answer in Settings, or set it to "Prefer not to say", at any time. This also clears the copies on your memorials. We then stop using the earlier answer. Backups are overwritten as described below.
- If you delete your account: your answer is deleted with it. If you leave your memorials up, we delete their private copies too.
A funeral can show more than your answer does. If you hold a funeral in a particular tradition, people you invite will see its setting, words and readings, and they may take that as a sign of your faith or your family's. An invite link works for anyone who has it, so it can be passed on. If you would rather not show this, you can choose a funeral with no religious elements. When you choose a funeral with religious elements, we remind you of this. Afterwards, the public memorial shows that a funeral was held, and when, but not which kind.
Cassette tapes
You can keep up to 5 short recordings of your pet's sounds on a memorial, as cassette tapes. If you start from a video, your browser takes out the sound, and the video itself never leaves your device. Only the part of the audio you keep is uploaded.
- Who can hear a tape: only you, unless you choose otherwise for that tape. You can let visitors play it. If you play it during a funeral, everyone in the room hears it, even if it is otherwise only for you.
- A tape for a star: if you choose a tape for your memorial's star, anyone who taps the star can play that tape, even if it was otherwise only for you. Only the memorial's owner can make that choice, and you can change it at any time.
- "Only you" is not the same as sealed. Other visitors are not offered the tape, but it is stored on our service. We do not listen to tapes as a routine. We may listen if someone reports one, if a rights holder or a person recorded complains, or if the law requires it.
- Other people's voices: a recording can pick up people talking, children, names, addresses, the television or music. Please listen before uploading, and trim those parts out. Anyone who can play a tape could also record it, so we cannot take it back from them.
- What we do not do: we do not use tapes to recognize voices, and we do not use them to train artificial intelligence.
- Hidden details: audio files can carry details such as a title, a date or a place. We remove these when you upload a tape.
- Removing a tape: you can delete a tape, or change who can play it, at any time. Tapes are removed with their memorial. If you delete your account and leave your memorials up, your tapes are deleted, because you could no longer manage them. Backups run out as described below.
- If your voice is on someone's tape: you can ask us to remove it, and you do not need an account. Write to privacy@bridgeside.pet, and tell us which memorial it is on.
Weather and your approximate location
The sky in our places and at outdoor funerals follows the time and weather where you are. To do that, our hosting provider, Cloudflare, works out roughly where you are from your IP address, and we round that to about 7 miles. We never ask your browser or device for your location. In the United States, we send that rounded location, and nothing else about you, to the US National Weather Service to get the local forecast, and we keep that area's forecast for about 20 minutes, and the address we got it from for up to a week, with no record of who asked. Outside the United States we ask no weather service. You can turn weather effects off under You, and then we do not look up your weather at all.
The same rough location also tells us which of three parts of the country you are in: east, central or west. We use it only to suggest a room near you when you enter. It is not stored, logged or put in your room ticket.
We do not store your location, log it, attach it to your account, or show it to other people.
Signing in with Google
Google is the only way to sign in. Google tells us an ID for your Google account, your email address and the name on your Google profile, and we check this on our server. When you first sign in, that name becomes the name others see here, unless our word filter refuses it, and you can change it at any time. We do not receive your Google password, and we have no passwords of our own. Google handles its side under its own privacy policy.
The sign-in button comes from Google. When a page shows it, your browser contacts Google to get it, so Google can see your IP address and any Google cookies you have, even if you do not sign in. We show it only when you choose to log in.
How we use your email
We use your email to recognize your account and to contact you about things that matter, such as a security problem, a report about your content, a purchase or refund you asked about, or the service closing. We do not send marketing email.
Buying credits
Only adults signed in with an account can buy credits. You pay on a secure page from Creem, our payment provider. Creem is the merchant of record for these sales: it takes the payment and handles any sales tax.
- What goes to Creem, not to us: everything you enter on its payment page, such as your card details, your name, your email and your billing address. Creem keeps these under its own privacy policy.
- What we receive from Creem: the order and checkout numbers, which pack, the price, the tax, what was paid and in which currency, whether it was a test, and later any refund or dispute and its amount. We drop anything else Creem sends, including the name and email you gave it.
- What we keep: for each purchase, your account ID, the pack, its price, its status, what was paid, the tax, what was refunded, the credits it gave and any taken back, the dates, and Creem's order and checkout numbers. For your credits, each time they were added, used or taken back, with what was bought and for which memorial. For each thing added to a memorial, which memorial, what it was, its price in credits and which account paid. For each notice Creem sends us, its number, its kind, which order, refund or dispute it was about, what we did with it, and when, with none of its contents. And a ledger of what is owed to animal shelters and rescues for each purchase, which holds no person.
- Who can see it: you can see your own credits, purchases and history. Nobody, including a memorial's owner, is shown who gave a gift. The Giving page shows only totals, and each donation we make with its receipt.
- How long: we keep these records with no set end date, because financial records may need to be shown long afterwards, and the database refuses to change or remove the ledgers. A checkout you started and did not finish is deleted after 30 days.
- If you delete your account: your purchases, credit history and what you bought stay, for financial records, but your account ID on them is replaced by a random one that leads back to no account. Creem's order numbers stay with them, because that is how a later refund is matched, and Creem's own records of your payment still hold what you gave Creem. Credits left on your account are closed out. What you gave to someone else's memorial stays on it, with nothing to show it was yours.
What we keep on your device
We use one cookie to keep you signed in, and if you use the site without an account, one cookie that identifies your device so you stay the owner of what you made. Neither is readable by scripts on the page or used for advertising. Your browser may also remember your chosen name and look, the place you chose, your sound and weather settings, and it may keep a draft of a Life Card answer or a shrine you are working on, until it is saved. On a shared device, the next person using that browser could find these. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party trackers.
To see how the site is doing, we count a few things each day as plain numbers, such as visits, first steps taken and devices that came back, and your browser keeps a small note of the day you first came and what it has already counted, so nothing is counted twice; the counts hold no account, device, address or anything else that could say who.
Reports
Anyone can report a person, message, memorial, photo, cassette tape, guestbook note or gathering. A report holds who reported, what was reported, the reason, and the name of the person concerned. If someone is signed in, it may be linked to their account.
Messages are attached. While you are connected, the room you are in holds your last 20 messages in memory, including direct messages. If you move to another room, they are kept for up to 10 minutes in the room you left, so that the next room can take them over. Otherwise they are deleted when you leave. If someone reports you while they are held, those messages are saved with the report, and we read them.
So direct messages are private and not stored in the normal course, but they are not sealed. A report attaches only the direct messages between you and the person reporting.
A report can outlast what it is about. When something is reported, a copy of it is saved with the report so that we can look into it: for a memorial, its pet's name, breed, story, the name you gave and the address of its photo. We delete that copy within 14 days of the report. The rest of the report, including the name you gave, is kept for the time shown above. This applies even if the memorial has since been removed, or was a temporary memorial deleted after 24 hours. The photo itself is deleted with the memorial.
If you share something very personal
Grief can bring up hard things, and we want to know if someone may be in danger. If someone reports concern for you, a report is saved for us to read, with your recent messages, and linked to your account if you are signed in. This applies to people under 18 as well. Nothing is saved automatically: we do not scan what you write for this. If you write words about wanting to die, your own browser may show you a quiet note with ways to reach someone. Whether it showed is not sent to us. The word filter lets these words through, however they are put, and keeps no record of them.
We read these reports only to decide how to respond, and we delete them after 30 days.
Please take care with what is public
Public memorials and guestbook notes are open to anyone, and people or search tools can copy them. Public gatherings can be seen by anyone. Please think before sharing your full name, your address, or anything about another person. Photos can also contain hidden details, such as the place they were taken. We remove this location information when you upload a photo.
We cannot take your words back from someone who has already read them.
Changing and removing things
- A memorial: you can edit or remove your own memorial. If you remove it, it disappears at once, for everyone, including you, except for the short-lived copies described under "What deleting does not reach". For 30 days you can bring it back exactly as it was, and we can too, if you ask. After 30 days it is deleted for good, with its photos, tapes, Life Card, guestbook notes and funerals. A memorial made without an account is deleted at once when you remove it. Making a public memorial private works the same way: it leaves its place at once, apart from those short-lived copies.
- A gathering: you can remove a gathering you created.
- Your account: you can delete it yourself, and you choose what happens to your memorials.
- What happens at once, either way: your account is removed, so you are signed out everywhere and can no longer sign in to it. Your name is taken off your block list, other people's block lists, gatherings you hosted and reports you made, and the link between your account and the guestbook notes you left is removed. Credits left on your account are closed out.
- Delete my memorials too: your memorials disappear at once and are kept hidden, with their photos and tapes, for 30 days, and then deleted for good. In that time you cannot bring them back yourself, because your account is gone, but we can if you write to us. If you are under 18, they are deleted at once, with nothing kept.
- Leave my memorials up: your account is removed, and your public memorials stay up with no owner. They still show the name you gave, the story and the photo. Their private photos and tapes are deleted at once, because no one could manage them. After this, the site can no longer tell that they were yours, so to remove one later you would need to write to us, and we may not be able to confirm your request. Private memorials are hidden at once and deleted after 30 days, because no one could reach them afterwards.
- Your records of agreeing: when you accepted the Terms, and when and to which wording you agreed about your answer on faith, are deleted with your account.
- Purchases: kept for financial records, with no way back to your account, as described under "Buying credits".
- If you were a guest: there is no account to delete. Write to us and tell us where your guestbook note is, and we will look at it.
- What deleting does not reach:
- Backups and recovery copies run out after 30 days, so what you delete is gone from them within 30 days after it is really deleted. For a memorial that is 60 days at most from the day you removed it. We keep a daily copy of the database and of photos and tapes, in a private store in the United States, so that memories survive an accident. Cloudflare also keeps its own recovery window for the database of up to 30 days. If we ever have to restore from a backup, we apply your deletions again, so what you removed stays removed. If we take something down on a legal or safety request, it does not wait: it goes at once, and we also remove the photo or tape from our backups within about an hour. A deleted memorial's words can remain inside a dated copy until that copy runs out.
- Short-lived public copies: a browser that already had a public memorial's photo, words, details or guestbook can keep showing them for up to 60 seconds, and a Cloudflare location for up to 30 seconds. Its name can stay in a public search result for up to 60 seconds, and in a list for up to 15 seconds. This applies to every removal, including one we make on a legal request. Anything someone saved stays with them.
- Its spot in a place stays taken on the map of its field while a removed memorial waits its 30 days, though the map shows nothing about it.
- Guestbook notes you left on other memorials stay, with the name you gave, even after you delete your account, because they are part of someone else's memorial. Once your account is gone we can no longer tell which are yours, so to have one removed, write to us and tell us where it is.
- Reports and bans are kept for the time shown above, including what a report saved about a memorial that has since been deleted.
To remove something you cannot reach yourself, write to privacy@bridgeside.pet. We will reply within 3 days.
Who else is involved
- Hosting: the site runs on Cloudflare, with all its data held in the United States. Our main database is in the eastern United States. The rooms where people meet and talk can run anywhere in the United States, depending on who arrives first. Cloudflare stores and transmits data for us.
- Payments: Creem, as described under "Buying credits".
- Sign-in: Google.
- Weather: the US National Weather Service receives a rounded location for each area we ask about, from our servers and not from your device. See "Weather and your approximate location."
- Hosts: the host of a funeral or gathering can see who is in the room, and can mute or remove people. Hosts are other visitors, not our staff.
- Moving data across borders: we are based in South Korea and our servers are in the United States. Everything described on this page is stored in the United States by Cloudflare, from the moment you send it, for the purposes and periods this page gives, and may be seen from South Korea when we look after the service. If you buy credits, what you enter on Creem's payment page goes to Creem, under its own privacy policy. If you do not want this, please do not use Bridgeside, or delete your account.
- We do not sell or share your information for advertising.
- Legal requests: we hand over information only when the law requires it, or when we believe in good faith that someone is in immediate danger. For guests, we often have little to give. For accounts, this could include your email.
- If someone may be in danger or a child may be harmed: we may pass information to emergency services or child-protection organizations where the law allows or requires it.
If something goes wrong
We work to protect what we hold, but no service is perfectly secure. If your information is exposed in a way that could affect you, we will tell you as the law requires, using your account email where we have it.
Children
Bridgeside is for people aged 13 and older, including guests who come through an invitation. We ask everyone for their month and year of birth before they enter.
We do not keep your birth date. If you are 13 to 17, we keep your age group and the month you turn 18, so that the site can work the right way for you. We delete that month once you turn 18. If you are a guest, this stays with your visit. If you are under 13, we do not let you in, and nothing about you is sent to our servers. Your browser remembers that answer for 24 hours, and nothing more.
If you are 13 to 17:
- We keep what you share only to give you the features you asked for. We do not sell it, and we do not use it for advertising.
- You can walk in our places and go to funerals you are invited to, and with a Google account you can make memorials, shrines, tapes and funerals.
- There are no direct messages to or from you, no public chat, and no gatherings of any kind. Your tapes can be played only by you. Guestbooks on your memorials start closed, and you can open them. You cannot buy or use credits.
- We do not ask about your faith. Your name is not shown on your public memorials, and we do not suggest you to anyone.
- Your memorial, its story and its photos can still be seen by anyone, so please leave out anything that says who you are or where you live.
If you told us a wrong birth date, write to us: we will lower your age group right away, and we review any request to raise it. If a parent or guardian tells us someone is younger than the site shows, we will change it.
We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the site, please write to privacy@bridgeside.pet, and we will delete what we can find.
A parent or other adult may hold a funeral with younger children beside them, using the adult's own device. Please do not let a child under 13 type or enter their own name. Please also think before posting a photo, story or tape that shows, names or includes a child, because public memorials can be seen by anyone.
Your rights
Download my memories: you can download everything on a memorial you made, at any time: its story, Life Card answers, guestbook, photos and tapes, as one file. It does not include your answer about faith, and it holds other people's guestbook notes, so please take care with who you share it with.
Depending on where you live, the law may give you the right to see, correct, delete or get a copy of your information, to withdraw your agreement, to object to how it is used, or to complain to a regulator. If you write to privacy@bridgeside.pet, we will answer wherever you live. If you have an account, please write from its email address. If you were a guest, we may need to ask for something that shows the information is yours, and we may not always be able to confirm it.
Some US state privacy laws apply only to larger businesses, and we may fall outside them. Others may apply to us because we handle information about faith. We still do not sell your information.
Bridgeside is made for people in the United States.
If Bridgeside ends
We hope to keep this place open, but we cannot promise that it will last forever. If we decide to close, we will post a notice on the site and write to the email on each account at least 90 days ahead, so that you can download your memorials. After closing, we will delete the information we hold within 30 days, except for what the law requires us to keep, such as financial records. A sudden failure could leave less warning, so please keep your own copy of any photo or story that matters to you.
Changes to this page
If we change this page, we will update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will show a notice on the site before it takes effect.
